We heat with firewood, so we have surplus ash.

We breed pigs, so we have surplus lard.

Both are free by-products of our lifestyle.

Making lye soap costs us nothing, but our time.

I make soap. Give it a go! It's not hard. Any specific tips you're looking for?

The soap queen website is a good resource for how to, plus recipes and calculators.

My grandmother did when I was a kid. She put different fragrances in it.

I steal the little bars from the hotels when I travel...

As I said I helped an Aunt make it years ago ( She was a child of the 60's so I learned alot from her) I have a memory of some stage in the process she scraped a ring off the rim of the pot of some white material she said was used as a lotion?

The history of soap is long and varied. Note, however, that British lower classes only began to use it in the nineteenth century.

We learned how to make soap in elementary school. Candles too. I remember nobody liked the smell of rendering.

My High School was built with an indoor rifle range. Men had walked on the moon, humans seemed to be going places.

Now kids just stare at their phones 18 hours a day and have no idea what soap is even made from even though their phones could tell them how to make it.

Times sure have changed.
