I am sure you come after me with guns blazing!

What is your point in this discussion of novel corona virus?

I don’t understand how is your favorite subject of measles is relevant here, especially that you are incorrect
Rash is not the first symptom of measles. I am sure you know. Malaise, fever, coryza, etc- post-incubation, prodrome - which precedes rash, yes- the person is infectious, 4 days on average before and especially after rash appearance, but after incubation period

Let me re-iterate: one of the difficulties in managing this new unknown corona virus is specifically due to it being infectious during an incubation period- as far as it is being discovered in China.

Chinese infectious disease specialists with boots on the ground, a lot of them sick, some of them already dead telling us the results of their current research and observations of the still changing virus,
It is a new virus- they studying it and working on vaccines simultaneously, while trying to find ways to control the growing epidemic

I am not in the mood to continue arguing with you, Suzie. Pointless.
Go start a new thread on measles .
Here we are sharing the information about 2019-nCov and its impact in China and potentially in our country.
You are welcome to share the relevant info on 2019-nCov
Calm down. I merely used measles as an example. The fever and upper respiratory symptoms of measles usually precede the rash by two to three days, so the patient is infectious before anyone knows he is sick.

https://www.immunize.org/catg.d/p4209.pdf

"It takes an average of 10–12 days from exposure to the first symptom, which is usually fever. The measles
rash doesn’t usually appear until approximately 14 days after exposure, 2–3 days after the fever begins."

Your statement that "no symptoms during infectious period during incubation- unusual for a virus" is false. It is not unusual. What may be different about 2019-nCov is that it is transmissible for more days before symptoms appear.

By the way, by definition no one is symptomatic during the incubation period. For measles that is 10 to 12 days.

Every virus mutates. At this point I have seen no reports that 2019-nCov is "still changing" in a way that impacts its virulence.

https://www.statnews.com/2020/01/24/...and-mutations/

"Since the sequencing of the first 2019-nCoV sample, from an early patient, scientists have completed nearly two dozen more, said Andrew Rambaut of the University of Edinburgh, an expert on viral evolution."

"The 24 available samples, including from Thailand and Shenzhen as well as Wuhan, show 'very limited genetic variation,' Rambaut concluded on an online discussion forum where virologists have been sharing data and analyses."

A lesson from SARS-CoV for 2019-nCoV

Mutations may not increase virulence. In fact, a mutation during the course of a SARS outbreak apparently made it less virulent.

Oh, great. It turns out that China has a biological warfare research facility in Wuhan, where the outbreak began.

We're probably never going to know the truth about this.

Nope. This cat is out of the bag in China. They'd have to lock down much of the country, and handle it like the Ebola crisis, with coronavirus treatment centers everywhere, and no one going to work, school, only out minimally in order to supply food and keep the utilities running.

I feel so sorry for the "heroic" healthcare workers who are going to die in this epidemic. They have no choice in the matter. It's not as if the Chinese government will let them decline the invitation to heroically sacrifice themselves, without even the appropriate protective equipment available.

The new experimental vaccine will be much worse health wise than this big nothing burger virus. Don’t fall for the trap!

You’ll know when it’s the real superbug when the media goes into blackout mode and all the politicians and elite disappear. The fact that “they” are still gathering in public places let’s you know that everything is fine.

So the NIOSH N95 masks don't work? According to an embedded reporter in HK, he was recommending the mask to all his followers on the internet.

Sure- the heroes only could be Americans!
Other nations just “forced” to be heroes by their horrible governments under the guns!

How nearsighted and closed minded is this point of view?

The government received thousands of applications from medical professionals asking to be sent to Wuhan- forsaking Chinese traditional family “re-union” dinner during a Chinese New Year!
Why can’t we give a credit where a credit is due to the Chinese?

One insurance company a few days ago announced the equivalent of $28000 award each to100000 of the medical professionals involved in the epidemic.

Now I am reading that a charity is doing the same $28000 equivalent to medical professionals in the epidemic- they are collecting applications as we speak...
It is a lot of money for Chinese - very impressive for a private business to give such support

Hong Kong Chief Executive was wearing the mask while announcing the partial border closing

Agree that masks are not 100% efficient- the gloves probably as if not more important ..
The masks- probably mostly against droplets, containing virus, anything helps...
Here was a video posted on this thread about an American in Wuhan who wears swimming goggles for grocery shopping as well as a mask and gloves- smart
Very important to dispose the masks properly: the Chinese are struggling with abandoned dirty masks in the open and ask the public to put them in plastic bags or closed containers at home;
the refuse from the hospitals is incinerated.
