A short collapse, a couple of months, may not require all this but it is better to be prepared. I can't seem to convince very many people around me on this idea. Most of them are too fat, drugged out or undisciplined to be of any use.
I suppose I just got lucky in the neighbors I have. Everyone on the mountain (7 permanent / 5 part timers) think along the same lines regarding self sufficiency. From livestock (chickens, cows, goats), to large gardens (is it still a garden if it's over an acre??), to maple syrup, and beehives- we barter and co-op most everything. We have one apple press, a couple log splitters ( mechanical, not children!) that we rotate around. it just seems so easy with the right people. I have a good bit of heavy machinery; just last week, I traded my backhoe services for a big chocolate cake. To be honest, I think I came out well ahead on that one
I can't say that there was any conscious move to this cooperative we enjoy (It was in place when we moved there) . It just seems to have evolved out of the desire to help out your neighbor, and in turn help yourself. Everyone has something to offer. I dare say we could survive indefinitely if we had to. To that end, there isn't one house on the mountain that isn't armed.

I think this link was provided in another post. ClubOrlov: The Five Stages of Collapse

I believe it accurately depicts the stages of collapse. I don't see us ever getting to the final (5th) stage, but a stage 3 seems quite plausible, and worth planning for.

I believe you are reading more into these posts than what is here. For folks that share what you envision, go to Alpha Disaster Contingencies.

Interesting book to read: "One Second After" by William R. Fortschen. Describes what might happen to America following an electromagnetic pulse attack, which would be expected to destroy the power grid, telephone systems and internet, as well as food and fuel supply chains.

As well...the Neutron Bomb...never mentioned...few countries have them...

Only kill the people and animals and leave the buildings and infrastructure intact...

8 to 10 weeks to allow corpse decomposure and then re-occupy.

Almost puts nuclear in the category as a firecracker...

Don't forget, even if you find fuel, your car with electronic ignition or computerized diesel power won't run anyway. Antique points style ignitions should function though, along with non-computer controlled diesels. (keeping a points setup for the Chevy on the shelf just in case )

It sure is a busy time for us. We dig all of our gardens by hand, so that's what we've been doing lately. The seeds we planted inside will be able to go out soon! I have red rasberry plants soaking so that they be planted on the mules' grave this evening. Our lettuce garden is all under the cold frame.

Yesterday, we saw our first asparagus pop up out of the ground! That's always my first sign of spring. Can't wait for enough to pop up to have them for dinner!

This thread actually interacts with another in regard to the Tea Parties and the ever growing government and erosion of liberty. On that thread I posted the following:

[font="Arial Narrow"]And maybe, just maybe, the drones will vote this clown (Rockefeller) out the next time hold on no, I doubt it.

Can I place my conspiracy hat on?

We have Tarp, which is "forced" on every bank. Wells Fargo stated that there is no way they wanted nor needed TARP funds, but were forced with the infusion, now our government states how "surprised" they are with our market yesterday with Wells Fargo leading the way in regard to income. Ok, wonder why. Another government falsehood?

We have TARP II with the auto companies, next our government oust's the CEO of a private organization due to cash infusion, why, because now it is a government supported corporation. Fascism anyone? But wait, does our current government do anything about ousting the inept UAW leadership, who to this day refuses to make any concessions? Why no, could it be that the AFL-CIO was one of the largest donations blocks to the current socialist group?

Now we have Card Check or the Oxy-Moron bill in the house called the "Freedom of Choice Act" You know, where Tony Soprano can come in with his bat armed thugs and bang your head into forced union membership Let's not forget another oxy-moron bill called the Fairness Doctrine, which will legislate the radio waves. What about MSNBC, CBS, Good Morning Amerika, and so on, and so on? Almost remindes one of the GM CEO situation doesn't it? Now, we are being told Jay Bird wants to regulate our Internet. What two countries off the top of your head do this now? Communist China and the Islamic Republic of Iran. I'm sure North Korea would too, but since they do not have electricity after decades of government control why bother there.

Frankly, I am not going to get up and "Blame" Obama. This is a pattern in my opinion that has been working for years beginning with George Bush Sr, followed by Clinton, placed on overdrive by the Goofy Kid George Jr, and now on warp speed by our Socialist in Chief. Think of all the New World Order Speak of the the past Presidents and with our current Comrade just last week speaking of a Global World, World Currency, etc., etc., So we cannot blame our current Comrade in Chief as he did not force this upon us by armed coup, instead after 44 years of dumbing down America (Thanks to the first Socialist LBJ) we have created a generation of laziness and ignorance of history. Keep in mind what has taken 200 years to build can be destroyed in a short period of time.

So America, let's keep voting for the buffoons over and over and over again.
Just how long has Jay Bird, Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, Dodd, Frank, etc., been in office pushing the bills, writing the laws of freedom confication, only to be signed by a mind numbed fake leader, of which does not have a leadership bone in his body? Well, in Jay Birds case, the last time was about 70% of the WV voting population.

In closing:

Let's remember a famous saying

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage

So, we have now waited over 200 years to once again roll the tea? Ladies and Gentlemen, I think the tea is stale and Kool-Aid now rules our once great land. God Bless You and May God Save America.[/

Overall is their a coming Armageddon as Mountaineer at Heart stated a big phooey on? I doub't it, but we all need to look at the growing decay around us. Overall is a collapse coming or could it be here already. This goes back to the Great Nations quote above. If one has ever read the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire (I suggest it) one may find a very close mirror to today's America. Something to think about
