I'll have to PM you guys some of my specifics as far as resources and income. I don't have a lot (I could definitely blow it in a casino in a night if I really wanted to) but comparable to many Americans, I probably have "a lot". My income isn't very much at all - roughly $30K a year?
I'm very frugal. I've actually got into dumpster diving - I know, I know, it's completely gross. But you guys would be surprised what I'me salvaging. I haven't had to go into a grocery store in months (my bill has pretty much been eliminated). Look: //www.city-data.com/forum/55199233-post69.html
I can assure you I am very cleanly - I shower daily and brush my teeth twice daily - and I keep my clothes clean and neat, but I DGAD. I am an alcoholic in recovery who used to drink jugs of mouthwash so if I lived through that, I can live through eating food I salvage out a dumpster (and then wash off).
But I will have to give you guys some of my financial specifics. Going to work in a minute though - 13hr days this week.
Your high-risk behavior is potentially deadly. However, it's your life to throw away.
Rule #36:
Anything you do can get you killed, including [doing] nothing.
Life is combat.
Amen. I am reminded of one sudden windstorm, where a fellow sitting in his chair had not one, but two trees crash through his roof and land on top of him.
Dumpster diving used to be a regular topic on a newsgroup I was on. I'd mention more, but the topic would deserve a thread of its own, relating to self-sufficiency and preparedness.

I think that poster is referring to the poison I was drinking.

Dumpster diving is high risk behavior.
So are a lot of other things.
One of my previous jobs was using a weed eater on a tank gunnery range,
sometimes while nearby ranges were "hot."
High risk.
You have to determine if the risk is worth the reward.
For me, dumpster diving isn't, despite a government experiment
that left me with an "enhanced" immune system.
(But that was another risk vs reward thing, and another thread.)
This thread is more about risk of IRA's vs Other Investments.
The OP is not where near retirement age, so "cashing out" of IRA's is definitely not something I would recommend (of course, my recommendation is worth what he paid for it )
My assessment of the odds of a recession starting next year is about 40% chance.
My assessment of the odds of a total collapse in the next year is less than 5%.
(and most of that chance would be subsequent to a nuclear detonation.)
Again, my opinion only.
Topic drift alert.
And: experience varies.
We don't live in the same places,
nor do we go to the same supermarkets.
Experience varies.
You're right I won't hijack the thread anymore.
