I live in a pretty small town. We have several malls with target and wal mart and the big chains.

I'm interested in the deals I've seen at target for some electronics items.

I'm concerned however, that the scene will be a complete madhouse! On the other hand, the deals look pretty good, and I doubt I'll get a better deal any other time of year.

What are your experiences with black friday? Are the crowds really crazy?

I'm considering showing up a few hours after the stores open, rather than right when they open hoping they'll still have SOME of the stuff I'm interested in!

Madhouse is an understatement...it's a challenge, it is nearly impossible to navigate a store in fact. Just because something is an ad, don't count on getting it. You have to get there early, I hear Best Buy (Ive never done the Best Buy thing myself) is the one with the most insane waiting times, we are talking camping out, getting there the day before the sale to get your place in line. Every year I say "never again" yet I always end up going.

All I know is that we set everything up Wednesday night, and I'm glad I'm not there during the day on Friday when it happens.

I'm participating in Buy Nothing Day this year so I will be giving the whole Black Friday madness a miss.

I've called ahead and it seems as if I show up in the morning sometime, I should be ok buying what I want to buy.

Also, I've looked at the black friday ads of the merchants I'm interested in, and a lot of the products are lower quality brands which are marked down.

Nonetheless, I've managed to identify a handful of items which I will likely purchase that day.

It depends, in smaller towns you will probably have better luck at getting what you want than in suburbs of major cities. I have always gotten what i wanted by going a few hours later as long as it was not a very popular item.

I should also do a little sleuthing for possible good deals on 'cyber monday' or the day after christmas.

I expect a yawn this year. People aren't spending.

I spent the last 2 years buying online right at midnight when that Friday begins. You can get most deals advertised online.

It depends.
We went to Wal Mart one year to get a TV that was on sale. We got there before the store opened but a few people were there for the tv and 90% of the customers were in the entertainment area. In another random area of the store were the tvs and we were out of there in about 1 hour. Checkout took longer than finding the tv itself.
So if you go to Wal Mart, look around in other areas of the store if you are looking for a tv.
I would avoid Best Buy as it can get maddening with people making a line out front overnight.
