Okay, I know about upselling, asking for your zipcode, asking for your name. I get it. But today in AE I was asked while browsing if I wanted to apply for an AE charge: "You don't even have to be approved, just apply and you still get the discount." Come on. Then while checking out, I was asked no less than three times. After saying no, no, and no. I was then badgered for my email!
Oh, I forgot, was also in DSW, the shoe place. Same thing. The clerk was forward enough (trained enough) to ask me why I didn't want to get a discount. Give me a break. I know they are "just doing their jobs", but it is annoying. Yes, I know I can shop online and not be bothered but I like to try on.
If retailers want to keep my business, just leave me alone!! A simple acknowledgement, a welcoming gentle hello will suffice . Don't pounce on me, asking for all manner of personal info.
Their jobs have gone from selling to you to extracting from you, i.e., personal info. I agree entirely with your post!!
Our local Fashion Bug is going out of business, and I wonder if this is why. I was in there once, and while I paid cash, I was still hounded for my phone number, and to apply for a store credit card, just like you said. When are they going to learn that most of us don't give our real numbers and zip codes???
I hate this instant credit idiocy! My mother had her identity stolen shortly after my father passed away, and the thieves went around to all these places that offer instant credit and purchased items using her identity.
I was at Payless the other day, buying a cheap pair of shoes, paying cash and they still wanted my phone number. I told the clerk I dont' give out my personal phone number to anyone. He just gave me a dirty look. lol Oh, well..
I agree. There are a few places that I do give my phone number and email address because I do want their coupons. There are some places where I decline because I'm not a regular enough customer to want anything or I've given information and don't get anything in return (on the coupon mailing list, etc.), so I don't bother.
Kohl's is one of the worst about credit cards. I've been shopping several times and I'll hear a perky voice come over the loudspeaker "You're doing great! We're up to 13. Keep going!" And I know they are talking about credit card applications. That's when I usually hurry up and leave because I know I'm going to get hounded.
My Brother who works for Tires Plus was recently told by his bosses that if he couldnt get more people to sign up for their credit card he would be demoted.
He is the second top seller in his region and has won two awards for his performance.
He told his boss that when a person says no to an upsell of the card, to him it means no.
His bosses reply was "you are a top sales person you should be able to sell anything to anyone"
