It's a small, upscale grocery store. Lots of organic products and foods you can't find at a normal grocery store (in addition to the regular stuff), but at much lower prices than Whole Foods.
Much higher prices than Sprouts. Honestly, there are only a few items I'll go there for. In general, they are too expensive. Their water crackers for 99 cents, their tarter sauce with dill and jalapeno, their spinach pie, canned artichokes in water, and olives. Oh, and they have AUTHENTIC Spanish Olive Oil for only $6. I will admit they have interesting items, but still with a processed taste.

I like Trader Joes...I have shopped and loved them for years. no, they are not inexpensive..but they have some absolutely wonderful items..especially frozen items.
Also, everyone knows "3 Buck Chuck" (which is now more like $4 Buck Chuck..their house wine which is pretty tasty and very inexpensive!)
They privatize most of their stock (made by the manufacturer but with the TJ's name). Often you'll buy a name product, then the next time you come back, it will have been converted to their brand, but is the same product. They're not rock-bottom cheap, but if you're looking for quality/natural/organic products comparable to Whole Foods (but on a much smaller scale), it's worth taking a look. As far as how cheap, it can vary by region. Here in SF, TJ's is cheaper than Safeway, the dominant regular supermarket, but then again Safeway is expensive for a regular grocery store compared to some other parts of the country.
My favorite things are the cheese selection and their grains/cereals/pastas. Their liquor prices are cheap if you're lucky enough to have liquor at your store.
I do 90% of my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. I love that NOTHING in there store has high fructose corn syrup in it or artificial dyes. I only read labels to see calorie, fat, fiber info for the most part. Their prices are very good and quality is excellent!
Thanks everyone....not sure I am missing anything!
gbh, I think TJoe's is absolutely worth a visit. I occasionally drive quite a while to shop there.
It is more affordable than similar stores and has some exquisite products from all around the world. I strongly recommend it!
