Or the more likely scenario, you call out number 57 and five people come up saying that looks like their order, they don't know what number they had, they threw away the receipt, etc... Or you call out number 57, and number 55 comes up complaining that they've been skipped.
I've seen the number system cause a lot of confusion with some people. I've never seen multiple people with the same name order one after the other. And if they do, what are the odds that 5 Mikes come into the store at the same time and order the same thing?
It works at restaurants for tables. With very common names all they have to do is say Mike G. Or whatever last initial is. Never saw anyone complain a restaurant announces their name when the table is ready, what’s the difference?
My daughter has a slightly unusual name and for a time she dated a guy with an even more unusual name. They finally learned to give food cashiers, baristas etc. "Susan" and "Kevin."
Partly because of this thread, I went for some rare fast food the other night and when the Wendy's cashier asked for a name, I said, "Five Five Seven." He laughed. And entered it.
If something has to identify an order, numbers are far better. It's only the attempt to be Your Good Buddy that places try to use names. I blame Starbucks. But then, I blame them for a lot of things.
