Just wondering if you prefer having a bag, whether plastic or paper, when you purchase a single item from a store?
This is a curiosity of mine, because I work retail & so often my customers act as if their ONE purchased item will quickly be misplaced if they don't get a sack to put it in.
With so many people trying to be more & more environmentally friendly, it seems like people have little concern when it comes to bags. Yes, most of us have reusable bags, but leave them in the car, or wherever & insist on getting more plastic bags.
But back to my original concern, why is it necessary to have a bag for a single purchased item? Personally, I don't get it. I prefer to carry my item out of the store, or put it in my purse.

It depends on the item.

I buy frozen pet food - when I buy one bag of it, I do want a separate bag because I don't want to carry a cold/wet bag home in my car.

But if the item will easily fit in my purse, I normally do not want a bag.

I want to put a plug in for Envirosax bags here- they are re-usable bags that come in a bunch of different colors and styles. I have a several of them and give them out as gifts all the time, they roll up really small and hold over 40 lbs. Great for groceries and also when traveling.

For one item, I rarely want a bag. I almost never get a bag when I go to the fabric store - most items will either be going straight home or will fit in my purse.

No way I want to carry a slimy package of meat without one... and forget about putting it in my purse!

I assume that the poor clerk rining up and packing my purchase probably has a company policy to follow.
I assume that company policy probably says to pack the purchase in a bag.
I aslo assume that even if no policy, if a customer complains that no bag was offered, the poor clerk will be the one who gets blame.
Therefor.......
I make it my policy to always tell the clerk if I do not want a bag. It takes all of 2 seconds to say "No Bag Please" and eliminate any confusion or problems. Its so simple to tell the clerk you don;t want a bag than get upset afterwards because they gave you a bag.

Put a retail item in my purse, no almost never unless I am at Mom & Pop style store where I am known and the cashier would be the same one making the call to police to report shoplifting.

There's only one policy at the stores I shop at and that's my policy.
I take and use lots and lots of bags. I need them.

Lawdy, the checkout guy yesterday....$300 worth of shopping - a single loaf of bread gets its own bag, two small bathroom items have THEIR own bag. But, let's put 5 heavy cans in another bag, and three large bottles of soda in one as well...I think the fluro lighting in the store must've affected him.

For one item I usually won't need a bag unless it's awkward to carry otherwise. Sometimes that extra pair of handles is the difference between walking like a normal human and doing a sort of retarded shuffle to keep from spilling stuff.

I don't believe I've ever seen other items go in with bread, except maybe a bag of chips or something else extremely light. I also think in some states it's illegal to bag non food items with food items. One of the things that shocked me when I first moved away from my home state was grocery clerks putting cleaning supplies in the same bag with my food stuffs, yuck!

Just out of curiosity....what do you use all of those bags for? I reuse the ones I do take home for litter, trashbags & sometimes storage.
