Almost all of the major electronics manufacturers make their stuff in China and other countries that have labor practices that would be illegal here. One difference with Apple, though, is the magnitude of the company's profit margin and profits.
Apple could afford to pay its manufacturers more or hold them to higher standards and still be extremely competitive and profitable.
But... looked at that way, Apple is helping funnel money from the rich to poor workers in China. Without Foxconn and other assembly plants, Chinese workers might still be working in rice paddies, making $50 a month instead of $250.

What gets me is most of my fellow political liberals I know own Apple products and many are huge fans of the brand. They totally look the other way when it comes to Apple's labor practices; it's shocking.

That's what gets me when people complain about "cheap Chinese junk". They just make what is ordered...they are fully capable of producing good stuff, it just depends on what the customer is willing to pay.

Though I'm sure little, if any of the extra money that Apple pays trickles down to the assembly line workers.

Read this article, it explains some of the reasons why Apple moved their manufacturing overseas.

Something like this occurring in America? Don't make me laugh...

Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option and recount the time Apple redesigned the iPhone's screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company's dormitories, and then each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.
