From what I read, I think that coil mattress will suit you good. Soft layer is ok, but not thick and not foam. Medium to firm. Since you don't want a gel, latex or memory foam - maybe you would like to try the natural, old fashioned down/feather pad/topper.
If you choose a firm coil mattress, the 3 inches of softer feather topper will just make your body feel comfortable without sagging.
Something like that: http://bit.ly/IkUDlB, http://bit.ly/IkVrqA
I have this one, and my head & neck loves it: http://bit.ly/IkV3Za
Now all you need is find a place that will let you try it for a while and return if you don't like it.

What kind of bed you have?? A traditional, a sleigh or platform??

Its a wood frame with metal on both sides (To hold the mattress and box spring up)

My older mattress (The one i had for years) was slightly WIDER also! (I noticed that rite away when i got this new one )

Shortly after i started sleeping on this new FOAM garbage i started aching all over LIKE CRAZY and went thru months of extreme pain... (Finally i started sleeping on the couch which luckily IS somewhat better and the pain subsided somewhat!! (If it wasnt for the sofa,i dunno what i would have done (been sleeping on it for about 2 years now)))

Can't help with the pillow....I've been searching for a new one (preferably, foam, but not hard or heavy!!) for years!
Penney's sells latex foam pillows online, so does Overstock, and Sears.com.
I use nothing but latex foam pillows, fortunately they last for years.

Buying a mattress these days is a big pain in the neck, or lower back.....
I bought a super firm 7 years ago, because of back and hip pain, with a memory foam pillow top. Big mistake. The memory foam made me hot and the pillow top started sagging before 2 years were out. I bought a latex foam topper from Overstock a few years ago. I still get hot, but not as much, slept most of the winter with just a sheet and we live in Maine. I guess that's one way to save on heating bills.

When I was looking for relief from the memory foam I found a forum that was nothing but discussions about mattresses and toppers, which just goes to show how unhappy people are about modern beds.

Sounds like you purchased a mattress sight unseen, BAD move, you always go to the store and lay on it.
If a air mattress was too soft you ADD air until it is hard.

You do understand you will never get the same feel as your 20 year old mattress, quality has nothing to do with it.

You could go old school and put a board between the box spring and mattress.

Not true at all!!! I bought my bed in 2007 and it doesnt 'sink in' anywhere! I paid 4 k for this set...it better not sink and it came with a lifetime warranty.
