Even though same sex unions is only available in cetain states, the retailer is selling them nationwide.

The cards are adorn messages such as "For two special men", "For two special women," and "Mr. & Mr." and "Two very special women, one very special love."

The cards are made by Carlton Cards, a unit of American Greetings. Hallmark has been offering cards for same-sex couples to retailers since 2008, though Target doesn't carry that brand.

More businesses are courting the gay community, even at the risk of alienating some customers. Other companies, including Minnesota-based food giant General Mills, have publicly backed same-sex marriage -- a step Target hasn't taken.

That's great but such a shame it took so long.

And has still not been achieved by most stores. 2012, time for people to accept that we don't all fit the one size fit all "relationship" mould. For a start you would think there would be quite a market to seize if you are a good business person....

I was really dismayed a while back by an advert for "Sandals" resort on British TV which had a " mixed sex couples only"policy ( also seen on posters). The ads were banned eventually for being anti discriminatory but I could not fathom what the big deal was for this company to accept Gay couples ? The mind boggles.

I must have missed the memo that Gay is contagious and you get Gay "cooties" from having to share the same leirsure environment....

It seems to me a lot of companies are excluding people and missing out on "the Pink Pound" as it is colloquially known as in the UK.

Also it alienates a lot of straight people like myself who not only would now never go to a Sandals resort but advise anyone I know against it. I have Gay friends and if they are not good enough for a place then that place is not good enough for me to spend money on either. I vote with my wallet and will boycott companies with discriminating and exclusive policies.

Hopefully in a couple of decades ( I realise how naive I am as I type this !!!) there will not even be an issue about Gay people on our society and they will be fully integrated and embraced as simply a different group.

A year or so ago, I went to one of those H_ _ L M _ _ K stores because I was looking for a card for a single mother and her newborn baby. I found many 2 parentless cards butt hey were nuetral as in ot mentioning anyone just the general Congrats on the RugRat type thing. I asked the worker if they had any cards like what i was looking for and she sort of looked uneasy and whispered, "Go to Target, they are way more progressive" with a wink. Sure enough there was a section with some non traditional cards that included the unwed single mother baby card. They even had the divorce cards. And I saw the best wishes for the two of you (without the man and women i heard about (precurser to the out in the open same sex marriage cards). I found that Traget by far appears to be the one willing to open their shelves to items other stores would back away from to pander to a certain religious, political or whatever group.

Congrats to Target
