I hope to be engaged within the next year. I've never shopped for rings in my life. How much is a good-sized ring these days? What are the best stores with great quality & good deals?

I want to pick out my own ring. A lot of women don't want the engagement ring with the one stone & then the second band part that goes with it on th wedding day. I don't want it that way myself. I just like a nice 1-PIECE ring with 1 BAND, with more elaboration than just a single stone alone though.

I like:

modern
white gold
don't care for marquis or pear-shape stones
1-piece rings with just 1 band

Comments?!

Is there a diamond district anywhere near where you live? If so, go there; walk the shops; look at the customs; get prices. If there are none near you, get the names of quality reliable jewlers that work with semi or full custom rings. No one can answer the qustion because we have no idea what you will have as stones or settings. You can buy the same c.w. that cost $399 or $3,000 depending on the stone.

OK, thanks.

I figure the price for a nice-sized, good quality ring is around $7000. That ballpark figure seems just right to me personally.

I got what I felt was a pretty good deal through Utopia Diamonds (items in UTOPIA DIAMONDS BRIDAL JEWELRY store on eBay!).

This was 10 years ago but I paid around $3,500 and it appraised at two different local jewelers for $6,800-$7,000. GIA certificate came with it.

Over the years, I've read good things about Costco and their diamond rings; often considered a great bang for the buck. Saw a tv show talking about bluenile.com about half a year or so ago, thought it was interesting.

Other than that I don't know crap about jewelries since my wife don't value them much. I thank God everyday she hates jewelries. LOL.

Remember, the price of the ring does not determine love. My boss told me, when she got engaged, she got a $20,000 ring. I ask her how long was her marriage.....LOL, she said it lasted less than a year; she caught him cheating. LMAO.

OP here. Thanks for the info.

You know how they say that an appropriate price to pay is 2 months of a man's salary...wasn't that what they say?

How does one make sure the QUALITY of the diamond is good? Are there a lot of scammers these days? How about with reputable jewelry stores, such as Zales, etc?

This is just my own personal opinion and I certainly don't intend to hurt anyone's feelings, but why not just casually discuss with your intended the type of ring that you're interested in, let him know what you definitely do not want, and let him choose something that is beautiful, has the quality he is looking for, is within his capability to provide for you, and just accept it graciously? Before anybody goes off telling me how men have bad taste, and don't know how to pick stuff out - consider who and how they are choosing their life partner. Most important choice many men will make in a lifetime. Trust me, he has taste!! I guarantee you - he has chosen someone beautiful to him, with qualities he is looking for, and who he knows he is capable of providing for a lifetime. That huge diamond won't mean he loves you any more or any less than anybody else. You also mentioned that you are "hoping" to be engaged within the next year. If you were a man and your woman approached you with a defined list like you're suggesting - wouldn't you feel pressured to give that to her or am I missing something? My husband and I opted for matching ornate 18K gold Celtic wedding bands that we found online from a dealer in the UK. We are happy with our choice but I realize that not everybody would be.
