Why can't you simply go to a store, have a cashier ring up your purchase, pay for it and be done?

Instead its:

- Do you have our "courtesy card" or would you like to sign up for one in order to get the sale price?
- Will you be paying for that with our store credit card or would you like to sign up for one to save 10%?
- Can I have your email address?
- Can I have your phone number?
- Would you like fries or a drink with that?
- Would you be interested in any of these sales items?

Then you get the people in front of you who say yes to these things and you have to wait an extra five minutes while they try to recite their email address and the cashier tries to understand it correctly.

I went to Target tonight and after my purchase, I get a wad of printed coupons that I never asked for with my receipt for stuff I have no interest in buying.

Some retail marketing genius somewhere decided that : "Hey! We've got these people captive while we are taking their payment so we have an opportunity to upsell or collect personal information to spam them with ads later" and now it has run amok.

I literally cannot remember the last time I just paid for something and was done with it without any other b.s.

*Also, who trained the cashiers to use a separate plastic bag for every item in your cart? I sometimes think they get paid extra for handing out as many of them as they can. I thought we were becoming environmentally conscious?

You answered your own question. It's because sometimes people say 'yes' to those annoying questions the cashiers are forced to ask. If more people would speak up and let corporate headquarters know they find the questions annoying and intrusive it might change. But people can't be bothered or don't know how to properly make a complaint (ranting at the cashier doesn't count!), so it continues.

Don't blame the cashier for company policies. Cashiers don't get paid enough to be blamed for what the company wants or does.

I never said that I blamed the cashier nor am I ever rude to them. I realize they are just doing their jobs as they were told to do them.

I do know how to complain to the owners and have done so in the past.

What is the problem with ranting about a negative shopping experience on a sub forum about shopping?

Target is annoying about this. Once in a fiery mood I went off on the cashier asking me all those questions. She was surprised at my temper then just for fun she pushed the point again & again. I could have unleashed myself on her.

They do t do this at the grocery store I frequent. Well they do give out coupons, but it's for things you have purchased. They always give me ones for the coffee creamer I buy. As for waiting, I just take out my phone and entertain myself until the people in front of me complete their transactions.

That's why I love "self checkouts"

Walmart now has self checkouts with no limits for items.
Can't wait for them to get installed in all the other places I shop.

UMMM... you asked a question and got an answer? Who said there was a problem?
But it is true that most people have no idea how to effectively let a business know they don't like a company policy. Some people rant at the cashiers, some take it to store management, and even the ones who do complain corporately usually still phrase it as a store specific complaint, which does absolutely nothing worthwhile.
Pretty much anytime a complaint includes a store location the complaint goes straight back to that store, I don't think anyone at corporate offices bother to read or comprehend them. Exhibit A is the letter we were forwarded from a customer who was unhappy with the stop light in front of our store, making it difficult to enter and exit. We were told to make the customer happy, because we can totally fix that at store level!
