For guys clothes, Structure was one of the best stores available; high quality clothes at reasonable prices. I also remember the County Seat a great store for jeans and other casuals. In the northeast, we had Filene's and Jordan Marsh, which were a bit a higher caliber than Macy's. When I would visit relatives in that lived in the south west, I liked going to Mervyn's.

In California: Robinson's, The May Company, and Bullock's were good department stores. In Illinois: Marshall Field & Company.

Call me crazy, but I wish many of the regional discount department stores of my younger days were still around, like Ames, Caldor, Bradlees, Jamesway, and Hills (especially Ames). These stores in objective terms weren't as good as Wal-Mart (which is cheaper and often has a broader selection) or Target (which has a nicer selection), but both Wal-Mart and Target are extremely boring to me.

The funny thing about Ames is that it was never located particularly close to where I grew up, but it was located in each of my parents' original hometowns, the town where I went to college (where it was the only discount department store around), the town where I went to grad school, and the metro area where I had my first professional job after grad school. It was a store I had visited and bought many items at for many years from my childhood up until 2002 when I was almost 30 years old.

For clothing, I would say Alexander's which also used to be in the NYC area.

Nostalgia and Old School here, but 5 and dimes were fun, and Woolworth's comes to mind. Especially because they sometimes had a grill/soda fountain in the back. Nothing like getting a quick hamburger while browsing. And those stores were not so massive like Target so it was easy to find a few bargains after lunch and move on. Perfect size for browsing.

If we're going to list them, then we might as well list Crazy Eddie.

I miss our local stores: Sibley's, B. Forman Co., Edward's, The National, McCurdy's...and Scrantom's, a local stationery shop. And, of course, Fanny Farmer candies!
