I'd like to change my prepaid carrier, while keeping my phone and my phone number i.e. i like the phone I have and do not want to buy a new phone, while keeping my current number.
I understand most carriers require you to purchase their phone, but do I have any options?
The fist thing is to know what technology your phone uses. If its CDMA, you can't use it with a carrier that uses GSM. So if you have a unlocked GSM phone, you can take it to any other GSM carrier, but can't use it with carriers using CDMA.
As for keeping the same number, you can port the number across carriers so long as they do porting, not all prepaid carriers will port a number.
It's my understanding that they use some form of proprietary programing on their phones so even if unlocked, it won't work or totally messes up on all other gsm networks.
