Some of my friends have used it for educational, travel, etc. purposes. I've donated to their causes, but doubt I'd give to a complete stranger without sound assurances that I wasn't being ripped off.

Yes twice.

First time. Three people (they were really young.. early 20s) were killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. He survived but they didnt. It was 2 brothers and one of their GF's. They set it up to help the family with funeral expenses. I dont really donate much just 10.00 or so.

Second time was for my friend who's son was killed in a skiing accident. (Wasnt killed on impact but he died a few days later from his injuries). This was also set up to help with the funeral expenses.

I know they were both legit so I helped out

The GoFundMe.......was used for a young man that was hit by a car in our area.

They collected good money......but, the site kept a good amount of it for fees and services.

This is NOT a free service.

I think they keep about $1500/$1600 out of about $9,000 in donations.

What? A business that makes money off their services?

Yeah, they keep 5% of every donation.

5% goes to GoFundMe and then another 3% goes to processing fees.

Does it cost anything? While it's free to create and share your online fundraising campaign, GoFundMe will deduct a 5% fee from each donation that you receive. Since our fee is deducted automatically, you'll never need to worry about being billed or owing us any money. A small processing fee of about 3% will also be deducted from each donation.

Why does GoFundMe have to charge 5%? GoFundMe has major operating expenses like any popular internet service including technology, infrastructure, payroll & benefits for our dedicated team of employees. We have purposely created a business model that allows users to sign-up and launch their campaign for free. Visitors to our users' campaigns are greeted with a frustration-free giving experience, void of advertisements and other distractions - helping our users raise even more money.

GoFundMe operates on only a 5% fee deducted from each donation received. Very few organizations can claim they help as many people on such a small percentage of gross payment volume. While GoFundMe is a for-profit company, let's see how our operating costs measure up against some famous charities dedicated to helping others: Red Cross (9.1%), Susan G. Koman for the Cure (17.8%) Wounded Warrior Project (41.9%).

In short, GoFundMe is an incredibly efficient and effective way to provide financial support to those you care about most. Not only can donors give in an extremely targeted way, but more money goes directly to the intended recipients than other organizations can claim.
