What a very odd and idiotic attitude toward money. Why on earth would anyone throw money in the garbage?
Even if you're not a spendthrift, what's wrong with getting $2.00 off your next purchase, or giving it to someone? You seriously had to ask yourself what you were going to do with a buck and change? You do realize money adds up, right? It doesn't come in self-contained large chunks. lol
You have to keep in mind that the Gap is not a store I ever go to so I knew once I got close to $25 it was not used in putting the card back in my wallet because I had no reason to go back in there. Remember I was only in there because I won the gift card at a raffle.
Some states now have laws that require stores to exchange your card for cash if you ask and it's below a certain value.
In addition, some states have imposed "no expiration" and/or "no chargeable fees" on store gift cards. As a result, stores have to maintain and keep active cards with low balances for years. So stores have opted to pay out the remainder in cash when it gets too low to make it worthwhile to keep the card active for years.
I would give it to the person behind me in line, or someone who is shopping in the store. Someone did this for me in Home Depot once! Really brought a smile to my face.
I love this! Kinda like buying the Starbucks for the person in the car behind you -- it DOES put a smile on their face -- and yours, too!
My son LOVES a certain bookstore, so he often is gifted gift cards to this store. Over Christmas break (but before Christmas), we went there together and he found some books he wanted to purchase, including a hard cover Game of Thrones book that was something like $35. He gets to the register, the clerk rings up the total, and my son pulls out a fist full of gift cards. $2 on one, $1 on another, $3 on another, and so forth. He purchased 3 or 4 books, and ended up handing over about $10 cash, because every single gift card he used kept knocking that total down!
So bottom line is every single bit off COUNTS. SOMEONE somewhere would have appreciated all those almost empty gift cards you've tossed.
I agree with handing it to the person in line behind you if you absolutely know you are not going to use it. I've done that with coupons as well, if I have a coupon on me and know I won't use it, but see someone else has that item. People seem to appreciate it.

Next time, please consider giving the card to someone else who is shopping, and tell them there's still $2 on it.
I've had people hand me 20% off coupons that they've just used, and that I then used, and turned around and passed it along to another shopper! It makes you feel good, and it makes for pleasant interaction with people you would probably not otherwise speak to.
I understand being surprised that a store you don't go to regularly gave you back change for a gift card. That doesn't happen everywhere.
The confusion about what you were going to do with the extra $1.04 is what blew my mind. Or the thought of just throwing out the gift card if it still had $2.00 on it.

Thanks....I definitely appreciate it! I was in Victoria's Secret and the person ahead of me handed me a BOGO coupon they weren't going to use....I saved $42.50 (I had 2 of the same item I was going to buy)
One of the grocery stores I frequent is always doing one promotion or another where you collect stickers to win prizes or earn pots and pans or dishwear.... I DID play the one with the various prizes, but the others, I just get my stickers and hand them to the first person I see who IS collecting them......
We collect the stickers, give them to me!
