I've been known, if I'm in line at such places to fake like I'm talking on the phone and say, quite loudly "yes I'm running late because I thought I was at the gas station but apparently I'm in a gambling casino, I guess next time I come here I should bring my camping gear so I can pitch a tent while waiting until sunrise to pay for my gas" or the like.

Did you REALLY say that into your cell phone, to nobody? THIS has to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever read......How old are you?

This post is about waiting in lines....Have you ever gone across the border to Canada? There are lines...big lines sometimes...and then you get right up there behind the car at the booth and they start ripping it apart, limb from limb..sometimes, they bring out the dog to sniff... while you sit there because there is a LINE behind you..and WAIT till they are done....I would LOVE to see what you would do then...not much.....

Yes, that's a bit ridiculous.

I suppose in your example it would be the person's fault for looking suspicious while they go through customs or something lol.

Most of the time, like 95-98%, I get through any line rather easily and quickly, with courteous checkers and around other courteous customers. I don't see the "lottery ticket, cigarettes or cases of beer people" (except at a gas station), OR those otherwise holding things up, generally. Maybe stores I frequent are managed well, have efficient checkers and organized customers, I don't know. (One store does perpetually poorly, DOES have lines, a couple of checkers available, some stocking issues and I usually avoid it.. but still).

Yes, there are those customers...you see 'em.. walking up to the registers, tense, with a look of despair, ..holding a bottle of wine or a cake from the Bakery... or spaghetti, a jar of sauce and bread. They have expectations, resentful that others are buying groceries for a family or for the week. There are always those times that I will tell one to "go ahead" as others have offered me, yet if it has been a long day and I feel tired and one has an attitude behind me, I will continue loading my stuff to get out of there.
Our local small towns are generally pretty easy going. Nothing to get mad about. I don't go shopping that often. I do remember going to walmart on Friday evening and seeing a lady dragging a cart around. I felt bad for her. You could tell she had just gotten out of work and she still had to grocery shop for the week, go home, make dinner etc. That is enough to make anyone cranky.

The store down the street from me did have some strange cashiers. They never smiled and just looked at you with dead eyes. I know it can be a bad habit that some of my people have (Hispanic) lol. I would go in there and be all bubbly just trying to get them to crack a smile.

For one thing it's unnecessary overcrowding of the store. For another these large groups of people tend to block the aisles so no one else can get past them.

Lastly, these people ALWAYS seem to meet up with other ginormous families and make the blockage very nearly a fire hazard.... and they always seem to have these little reunions just inside the entrance where people are trying to get in and out.

It's just not necessary to bring your entire family (8 or more) shopping. It's not a trip to Disneyland it's a grocery shopping errand. I don't understand why everyone has to be drug along. ONE person can write a list of what everyone else needs beforehand and go to the store. Maybe two. But that's more than enough.

I actually see this a lot at my store. Especially in the evenings. It's mostly the Hispanic families and I think it's because they only have one car and can't go till after their 'driver' gets off work. They have the whole family from Grandma to tiny baby. I don't notice them holding things up though. They DO make for long lines at McDonald's. lol Maybe it's their 'social time'.

I'll never forget a fat guy I had one time as a cashier who held up my line because "he didn't want to put anything on the dirty belt. They should wash it once in awhile." Fine if you have things like clothes and decorations. No, he had boxed food and auto fluids.

I would just refuse to go to Canada on that basis alone. Our vacations, heck our very LIFE, is prioritized with the avoidance of lines as the determining factor in what we will or won't do. It is EVERYTHING. I've been known to not go to the hospital when experiencing pains because of the long wait which it would've involved. I'd rather have the pain of the condition. We vacationed the past few years where we did specifically because we not only enjoyed the activities but also because they didn't involve long lines. That is why I will NEVER go to Disneyland or Disneyworld, no matter how much our children may like it, not even if it was paid for--because it involves lines. If I'm waiting more than 2-3 minutes for a ride, then it's a no go.

And yes, I DID say that in the phone, it's called sending out a hint, and I don't normally do hints much, but that is one occasion where I did. I wasn't going to say to the person straight up "gee whiz, can't you gamble somewhere else?" After all, the store offers the service (although they shouldn't, because of the hold-up it creates). Done the way I did it, you're not getting up in somebody's face, but people are still hearing of your displeasure.

As a cashier I really hate a dirty conveyer belt and try to clean it as often as possible. BUT sometimes my customers just won't let me! They keep coming, one after another, piling their stuff on the belt so I can't do it. I don't blame people for not wanting to put stuff on there but they have to give me a chance to clean it too. Or I will finally get a chance and get it half done but the next customer starts loading the belt so I can't finish. You'd think they could SEE what I'm doing and wait just a minute.

I agree with that, I hate it too. I had gone to replace someone else at the register and he had been like the second customer I got.

Another one that kills me is when I'm working the self checkout. There won't be anybody there so I'll be replacing bags and cleaning the scanners. Wouldn't you know, the next customer goes right straight to the one I'm working on when there are three others available. Why do they do stuff like that??
