Yes this is how it was with the Frontline! At one time I think they even had it locked in a plastic case and then the whole group was locked into the shelf hanger thingie.

I'm surprised they haven't locked up the printer ink yet.

AT my local grocery store with self check out, the person monitoring will strongly disagree with you! In fact, middle is the ONLY choice for waiting. Line cutters will be directed to get to the proper waiting location by the attendant. It flows VERY well that way.

And it really doesn't matter anyway, because most stores will make you go to the courtesy counter to get a refund - so no need to bother the cashier.
Whether you buy 5 or 100 items, how does it make a difference? It's not like you don't know what you expect to pay. Aren't you the one filling up your cart (or writing your shopping list)? Even if there are multiple people filling up your cart, you just add the two numbers.

It does matter. You don't need to go to the courtesy counter unless you made the mistake of paying when you noticed a discrepancy. A refund is only available AFTER you've made payment.

How so? It's simple math.

What about the person at the drive thru teller or ATM who, when their transaction is complete, must then double check the receipt, sort out every bit of paper in their car, pick up their purse, take out a pen, write down a note, take out their wallet, put the papers in the wallet, put the wallet back in their purse, put away the pen, change eyeglasses, put their seat belt back on, check their hair and check their phone before putting the car in gear and pulling away from the ATM or window?

Would it be possible to just pull up 20-30 feet to let the next person move up before doing all that housekeeping?

They will then win about 10 or 20 dollars and then proceed to purchase more lottery tickets with their "winnings", taking up even more time.

Also, the people at grocery stores who have to put items back since they don't have enough money to purchase everything in their cart. They will stand there and ponder over what items they can do without.

Check writers who have to write down the transaction in their check register BEFORE writing the check, have to ask what the date is, etc....
All of those--yes. The lottery ticket thing especially bugs me, a lot. I've been known, if I'm in line at such places to fake like I'm talking on the phone and say, quite loudly "yes I'm running late because I thought I was at the gas station but apparently I'm in a gambling casino, I guess next time I come here I should bring my camping gear so I can pitch a tent while waiting until sunrise to pay for my gas" or the like.

I used to live in NC during much of the Jesse Helms era, and I disliked how gambling was illegal based on moral grounds, I felt like a person should be able to gamble if they wanted to. When I later lived in AZ and gambling was legal there, I was like "good, last thing I need is not being allowed to gamble because some busy-body government official thinks it's not good for me." Well I had a good friend, who had lived in AZ all her life, and she would tell me how irritated she'd become getting stuck behind someone buying lottery tickets and I would say "what's the problem," thinking she was objecting on moral grounds like the NC government did.

Nope, eventually I came to see what she was talking about. Go gamble on your own time in a gambling casino.

Heck, I don't really follow a list. I just grab whatever, plus the basics.

i must confess that this year I've not been charged for a couple of items that totaled over 50 bucks, so if I was overcharged for something, I figure we are even.

If you don't have to pay tax on your online orders, that means that you don't have to pay tax at brick and mortar stores either. There's no real benefit, tax wise.

But it does Mean I do not have to get in my vehicle and make a 60 mile round trip to the military exchange store to buy the items. And I don't pay taxes at the military exchange store either.
