I have been getting lots of robo-calls to my cell phone from phone numbers that have the same area code and prefix as my cell phone. Same thing happens to my wife. Her prefix is different from mine on her cell phone but she gets similar tele-marketing calls as if it is coming from somewhere nearby. Obviously they are spoofing the caller-ID to make it look like it might be someone you know calling you.

Anyone know if that is that legal? Seems pretty sleazy.

It has become very easy to flag these robo-calls and we no longer answer them. We moved out of that area code years ago but kept our cell phone numbers. All of our friends and businesses we deal with now have the area code that is local to where we now live. We never get robo-calls or telemarketing from this area code.

Unfortunately, I think that Congress has passed laws that permit this outrageous influx of robo calls. If any of us did this to someone, we would be charged with harassment and stalking.

Anymore, I do not answer the phone if I don't know the number, but I get a lot of hangups and messages from these callers. I thought about getting a phone system that I could delete the number, but they now are calling from what looks like local numbers, which is a real problem.

Several years ago, I kept getting calls from all over but my caller ID said it was AIG calling. I called our attorney general's office, the NY attorney general's office, and e-mailed AIG and told them that if the calls continued that I would file suit. The calls stopped. Not so easy now since no ID comes up.

Even.the "Do Not Call" list doesn't curtail the number of unwanted calls (robo or not) because "charities" and political calls are exempt.

Regarding the cell phone, mine is set not to accept calls from parties NOT in my contacts.
