i dont mind them other places than the grocery. Our Kroger ones stink and people go with carts of groceries. The one Kroger, thats ALL they have open late at night is self check out.
they're much faster, there's always one available and I just walk up to it and stand there like a dork staring at it with one of my items held above my head. Quickly the monitoring lady will run over and start scanning my items for me while I bag them up. I've tried to make her carry them out to the car for me but they never do that.
We get a LOT of huge filled baskets at our self checkouts. They were never intended for that and were actually supposed to be an extension of the 20 items or less lanes.
You answered "How do you shut down self checkout lanes?"

I tend to avoid self-checkouts, as I would rather someone be employed.
In a store that is well managed, the self checkout station is manned at all times. If the regular checkout lanes continue to develop long lines, the store should hire more associates to operate additional checkout lanes.

Most Kroger stores are open 24 hours, have few associates working overnight, and will attract customers and loss prevention issues. Operating self checkout overnight is not a wise idea. Two regular checkouts should be sufficient if enough associates were working.

Okay.
But my point is that by using cashiers, cashiers stay employed.
One person overseeing 6 or more check out lanes is not the same as employing six or more cashiers (and maybe even some baggers!).
I don’t understand why the stores are going to more and more self-service checkout stands. If I’m going to do the work of your employees shouldn’t I receive some benefits or discounts?
I love self checkout lanes and avoid stores that do not have them. They are always faster since the clueless customers form long lines at the regular checkout lanes. Just don't try to pay with cash at the self checkout line since that will slow it down.

.
Funny this came up.
I ran to Winn Dixie Saturday Night to get wine and used the self checkout.
I ran back over Sunday morning to get coffee and the self checkouts were gone! Replaced with a regular checkout.

Publix here don't have them.
This happened at my Winn Dixie as well and I am also in the Fort Lauderdale area. Nobody could give me an explanation. A few customers did say the Winn Dixie self-check out lanes were a pain when it came to bagging the items. The machine would send an alert about the weight being incorrect.

Its all 3 kroger now that I think about it. 2 are 24/7 and 1 closes at 1am. The one sometimes will open a checkout if there is a back up but nope, all express.
