So I was making the grocery list and got thinking what does a pasta dinner cost these days?
I usually post on the thread: what 's for dinner tonight, and thought I often post the spaghetti.
Tartar minced beef 230 gr euro 3.50
spaghetti (egg pasta) pack 500 gr euro 1.47
1 zucchini (in summer price) euro 0.49
Pasta tomato/basil sauce jar 600 gr euro 2.81
Total price dinner euro 8.27 at todays exchange rate usd 9.25
(dinner is for 3 persons)
We recently made spaghetti with meat sauce for 40 people. Our marinara was made with tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste, ground beef, Italian sausage and meatballs and seasonings. Six pounds of dry spaghetti was partially cooked then warmed in crockpots at serving time. Total cost of ingredients was $200.00, about $5.00 per person needless to say, labor costs not included! It was a hit and served more than 50. It was for a nonprofit group/charitable organization. Lot of work but far better than jar sauce mixed with pasta.
package of pasta: $1.00
Italian sausage $4.00
hamburger l lb. $3.00
can of tomatoes: $1.00 but usually I have a jar I have canned in the pantry
Tomato sauce:3cans$1.50
Tomato paste $1.00
garlic/peppers,
mushrooms and onion $1.50
splash of red wine $1.00
spices?
total $14.00 but it makes a hell of a lot of sauce. I freeze it for future use.
btw: sometimes I do start with a jar or can of prepared sauce; still add the same ingredients though.
Box of cheapest pasta $1
Jar of cheapest spagetti sauce $2
1lb ground turkey or beef $3
Various Italian spices $.50
So about $7 and makes 3-4 servings. We mix all sauce and pasta together before serving.
About the same. I stock up during sales so in my pantry I have
Barilla whole wheat pasta 1 lb @ 75c
Jars of pasta sauce or canned stew tomatoes @ 50c
Usually I'd add an onion and a clove of garlic @ 75c
Meat $2-3
Diced veg (carrots) 50c
There is already Italian spices in the sauce. I'd add black pepper, soy sauce and hot sauce for flavor. 25c
A little cheese $1
I usually make a marinara sauce. At this time of year I only have to purchase pasta, olive oil and pecorino Toscano and a bread. If making a Bolognese, my favourite meat sauce, here is the breakdown.
1lb DeCecco #12 spaghetti-$1.89
Olive oil-50¢
Onion-75¢
Carrot-50¢
Celery-25¢
Prosciutto-$4.00
Ground beef-$2.85 or if using ground lamb-$5.00
1 can plum tomatoes-$1.09
Red Wine-.50¢
Stock-.50¢
S&P-.10¢
Cup of heavy cream-$1.25
Pecarino Toscano-$1.00
Fresh Bread-$3.49
Total-$18.17 or $20.32 should serve six easily with leftovers so maybe $3.03 a serving or with lamb $3.39 a serving.
Great now I'm craving Bolognese sauce!
I can't. I have all the ingredients here, no idea what I paid for them when I bought them.
I make my own sauce, using canned tomato sauce, but how much did I pay for that Tablespoon of dried basil? I think I paid $1.29 for the mid size can of tomato sauce
I use oriental rice noodles for spaghetti and I think a one pound package of those is about $1.60. I buy beef 80 pounds at a time and grind my own, so the burger for the sauce costs about $2.60 a pound, but I notice that if I bought it yesterday, it would have cost $2.80, again, bought 80 pounds at a time.
Onions, I get in a 10 pound bag and paid 38 cents a pound for the last bag I bought. How much does the onion weigh that I use in the sauce?
Oh! Got it. I have three 6 inch planters of basil that cost $3.99 each and that's just about right for one meal of pesto. So, $12 for basil, another $12 for pine nuts, Maybe $4-$5 for olive oil, and $1.60 for the noodles, a buck for fresh garlic, and several dollars for the Parmesan. $35 for pesto for 2 people? But a bit cheaper because I won't buy pine nuts anymore because the only ones I can find come from China. I'm going to try pesto with pistachios becasue they also have a bit of resin taste to them.
Well after reading oregonwoodsmoke's answer (that pesto sounds lovely) I forgot garlic. So I just paid $1.00 a bulb at the farm so add maybe another 40¢ to my total!
