I think they are great for co-workers, extended family, etc. I prefer something a little more personal when it's close family/friends.
I don't think they are a ripoff. Pointless, maybe? I think you should at least try to match the card to the interest of the person you are giving it to, not everyone will appreciate a gift card from McDonalds, lol.
I love getting gift cards to my favorite book store, restaurant, or liquor store.
If you do, just don't be like my MIL and say you got the gift card/voucher with points from your credit card, so you didn't have to spend any money.
One year my sister sent a Macy's gift card to me at Christmas. She was pretty broke at the time and I knew she didn't shop there. Later when I asked her about it--it was out of character for her--she told me she'd had credit card points and thought I'd like it.

I see what you are saying (and it was tacky of her to say that) but she could have used the points to get herself something, so it's not completely without merit, lol.
Gift cards aren't a bad idea if you're buying for someone that's hard to buy for. Just... don't do what my sister in law did. She bought a K-Mart gift card for my wife and I one year. The nearest K-Mart is an hour drive away. 8 months had passed before we got a chance to use it because we just never really had a reason to head that far.
