There are paid reviews everywhere from Yelp to Amazon. I have bought crappy products on Amazon based on the glowing positive paid reviews. Now I am bit more careful. I check the reviewer's history. They have to have more than 5 reviews at a minimum. And if they are ll 5 star reviews, that's a red flag to me that they are paid reviews. The fake reviews have something in common: they are glowingly positive and very vague in details.

My strategy when reading reviews is to ignore the 5* and 1* reviews and focus on the 2-4* reviews. You weed out a lot of the crap this way. Crap goes both way, good and bad reviews.

I discard reviews that have only one or two sentences, negative or positive. I don't trust 1 star reviews that have no details. Otherwise, I find negative reviews more honest and helpful and glowing reviews. I believe the people who pay for they products the review. They have no incentive or obligation to lie.

It's usually fake reviews if you check the reviewer's past posts and the reviewer have 20-30 reviews and every single item is 5 stars. What are the odds that every single item he/she bought is 5 stars?

Or reviews were it happens to have tons and tons of reviews in bunches within a small time frame, especially with all 5 stars and then no other reviews after those dates.

Some people only review something they felt was worth 5 stars, and don't review things they weren't 100% happy with. I used to do that, I had around 10 or 12 reviews on things I really loved. I realized I wasn't doing anyone any favors by withholding critiques so I started adding more reviews, and included things I believed could use improvement (even if I liked the product in general). I've never written a 1 or 2 star review. I've had 1-2-star experiences, I just don't write reviews about them.

I am looking for an anti-dog barking device because the neighbor's dog keeps barking. I saw this device on Amazon. Check out these 5 star reviews -- all coming from the same people (Clifford Sweet, Ingrid Coulon, Joseph Babor, Robert Nemchik, Catherine Lin, Joseph Tocco, Craig Swearingen, Bruce Nelson, Mark Cannon, Craig Swanson) who happened to review the same products and gave 5 star ratings to all.

Good detective work!

I've gone by face to face reviews by people I trust in their judgement .

Even when a service... Painter, mechanic, electrician.. I hold out til I get a solid referral.
I despise 'marketing' and often laugh at how gulible they think ppl are.

This x100.

I also discount restaurant reviews that mention holidays or birthdays or large groups.

I hate restaurant reviewers. Rarely do I agree with them. I think people give higher marks because it is a trendy place to go

Not always. Sometimes there is just not much to say.
