If a parent does not have the brains to locate a crib or toddler bed away from the window with blinds, use the cord cleats and wind the cord up, or forgo blinds entirely, put up a nice shade, curtains etc they shouldn't be parents.

This sounds like the industry self-regulating. I don't see the problem with that.

Deaths from window blinds show need for cord ban, study says - ABC News
This is very sad. 20 years ago this was an issue and at that time the separated cord ends were started. Before that time loop ends were common. COrd conversion kits were sold. Simply snip the cord in tow so both ends are equal length and either tie to cord in a knot or slip a cord tip on the end.

However the "word of mouth" goes away and everyone forgets about it. Also I love re-stores and stores that sell old window blinds but they often have this old school type and if the parents has never hear of it-then it the tragedies happen again.

Sorry to hear this is back in the news.

I disagree, some that are good parents may overlook this. Most parents make sure the area around the crib is ok but when a Toddler gets more freedom and dad or mom needs a shower or to run in the bathroom for a few minutes a kid can wind their neck in the Living room cord and die or come close in that time. Sad.

A toddler can do many stupid things while mom or dad takes shower. That's at least 10 min of "freedom". Good parents know to put baby back in the crib or pen, or somewhere secluded where they can't hurt themselves. Parenting 101...

Prior to clicking the link, the first thing that popped into my head was "I bet the call for a ban is from some advocacy group formed by someone who had a kid die tragically in this manner and they fixated on it." Yep, there it is.

Now sure, I feel bad for the family but it's largely a freak accident that is preventable through simple precautions and awareness without heavy-handed bans because wow....there would need to be a loooooong list of things to ban in a house before we got down to blinds.

Again, I'm just talking about the call for a ban and legislation stuff. The other stuff I'm fine with.

How many more people die from texting drivers and there is technology in place that could stop it; yet no one is forcing people to use it.

LOL at "a ban." Although my heart goes out to those killed by window blinds, a ban is unnecessary.
