My fiancee and I are shopping for a washer/dryer set that can handle a king size comforter, preferably under two grand for both appliances. A lot of companies advertise you can wash this size of comforter in their 4.5 CU FT washers, but is this really true? I heard that front loaders wash the best, but most over 5 CU FT are too expensive. What about toploaders? Do you need to get one without an agitator to wash comforters?

Feel free to share what you guys use, we prefer to buy from Lowe's because of their credit card. Thanks everyone for the help!

LG says its washer and dryer can hold a king-size comforter plus bedding but hasn't yet announced pricing information or when the appliances will hit stores. The price will probably be pretty high...

Thanks for this. I did look at an LG set that was being sold at Home Depot that was 5.2 CU FT for a front loader that could definitely do it, but the washer alone was $1,599 so it wasn't a realistic option for us. Thinking we may have to shelf the expectation of being able to wash bedding at home with our budget.

Or agree to use individual duvets

I never used the huge American style duvets, exactly for this reason:

Or just use a commercial laundromat - how often do you really need to wash comforters?

Good point. We wanted to try to do it once a month. Some psychos claim they do it once a week but I know they are lying. I guess in the end it costs what, $12 to do it once a month at laundromat, 12 times a year that's $144, not sure if that justifies an extra $500-600 for a washer. Thanks for all the replies.

Why on earth do you need to wash a comforter once a month? It's cover - assuming you use sheets?? Personally, I fold it over as it's too hot for me in the summer and in the winter.... if you don't have pets, don't smoke in your house, etc. - wash it once a year or two before packing it away for the season(s).

I wonder who is really able to sleep all night and find the sheet and comforter still neatly put together...

Well a quick update...We ended up going for the Maytag 5.3 CuFt topload washer and the matching dryer with steam option. It seems large enough to handle anything we need, and it turns out my fiancee can't properly bend/squat (back surgeries) to operate the front loaders so we had to find a toploader or else I'd have probably gotten the 5.2 CuFt LG set.

I use a washable percale duvet cover that has ties in the corners to ties the duvet in place. Those and the buttons at the bottom of the cover keep it in place.

I wash my comforter every 6 months. The duvet cover gets changed weekly, washed every other week. I have two sets of sheets and duvet covers. Since the duvet cover is the same fabric as the sheet, percale, I don’t use a top sheet. So no slippage.
