I saw on Amazon that they introduced a new type of brown paper padded mailer with a non-plastic water-based padding which Amazon claims is 100% recyclable. This is different from the old yellow paper mailers with the plastic bubble lining which are not recyclable.

I have yet to receive one of these. One of our local fulfillment centers (PHX6) still seems to use the old yellow paper mailers with the plastic bubble lining, and we also get quite a few shipments from other fulfilment centers in the blue and white all-plastic bubble mailers (which Amazon says are recyclable in plastic bag drop-off sites).

Sorry, I don't pay attention to any of the paper padded mailers. Why is that important to you?
FYI: those are Caremail Mailers, they are self-sealing and plastic-free, contain 90% recycled fibers (50% post-consumer content), and are fully recyclable with mixed papers.

Yeah, they are not new, just went out of favor when the poly cushion mailers cropped up. Now with more concern over environmentally friendlier packaging, they are making a comeback. Unfortunately, our community will just send them over to the WTE facility as the market for used paper is drying up.

I think you are mistaking them for the yellow padded bubble mailers. The new mailers are brown with a water-based padding, while the older ones are yellow with a plastic bubble lining. Amazon is phasing out the yellow mailers with the plastic bubble lining because they are not recyclable at all due to the paper and plastic being fused. With the poly bubble mailers, they are at least recyclable in plastic bag recycling facilities. The brown mailers with the water-based padding Amazon claims they are recyclable curbside.

Prior to the introduction of the bubble mailers, it was cellulose based padding in the mailers. The original brand were Jiffy mailers. They primarily used grounded up shredded newsprint sandwiched between study paper to form a padded envelope or pouch. There was even the older corrugated cardboard mailers. Plastic films and bubbles didn't start until the 1960's. The all paper based padded envelopes were around way before any plastics were introduced in packaging. Amazon has only switched what they are using, but the product they will be using has been around for over 50 years.

Haven't seen the new ones yet. Maybe they need to use up the old supply first.

I used to hate those Jiffy mailers, which were still common way into the 1990s. You would tear them open and the confetti would come flying out and get all over the place. Plus it doesn't cushion the item nearly as good as bubble wrap does, So there will be more damaged items.

This is just another feel good, fake environmental campaign. If Amazon really cared about the environment, they would switch to using reusable foam padded, metal or hard plastic bins, with combination locks. Amazon would deliver your item, you would use the combination number from your order to open it and take your items out. Then you would put the empty bin back on your doorstep, to be retrieved the next time Amazon delivers an item to you.

This is just trading one problem for another.
