Trader Joe's is the best in California; I agree with that. There are four grocery stores within walking distance of my house but the one I'm at every couple of days is TJs.
Kroger Marketplace. Has everything all the traditional Kroger's have plus more. Get fresher and better variety than Trader Joes and less out of date or funny smelling items than Sprouts. To me a "grocery store" has to be able to supply my weekly shopping needs. Many of the niche stores variety is too limited for me to consider them a "grocery store". They are more like specialty shops. Don't get me wrong, I'll go to TJ's to get a specific item, but if I see the same commissary listed or the same single product processor that supplies TJ's and Kroger, no reason to spend more the the exact same item.
The best grocery store is the one you're comfortable with and where you do all your shopping.
I don't agree. I think there are objective indicators that can measure this: inventory control, pricing, safety, etc. . .. Humans are not good judges of the quality of products/people. Think of how many of us end up with violent spouses. In Texas, HEB would probably win the prize.
The best stores in the places I have lived are Publix in GA, Pick n Save in WI, Buehlers in NE OH, and Harris Teeter in the Carolinas.
I enjoy specialty stores like Whole Foods and Fresh Market, etc., but not for everyday shopping.
I always shopped at Harris Teeter when living in North Carolina, or occasionally Lowes Foods. Food Lion always seemed dingy, and not very nice. I was surprised it was listed as the best grocery store in North Carolina.
