I've been shopping for a small freezer (sub 5 cubic feet) to go outside and it's a tough row to hoe. I want it to have a lock, and I'm fairly set on an upright even though they're less efficient (I'm getting to the age that digging dip into a chest just isn't wise). Though I'm flexible on that. But it must have a lock. And I really want it self-defrosting (which seems to cut out all chest freezers)

It seems to me that one's location in the country will determine the freezer's ability to keep things cold. I'm in southwestern North Carolina, in the mountains, and the summers can be hot and humid. I'm not sure a freezer will keep things frozen outside in our summers, and I don't know of anyone who has one (which may be a clue). I have 2 spaces in mind for it; both uncovered (but shaded) with one in a corner (more protected - but under a window, so that spot requires a chest, not upright) and one just against the wall. A third option is unappealing: I'd hate to have to put it in the carport (no garage) because it's cramped as it is.

Do you have a freezer outside? Does your area have hot summers? How does it work out for you? Chest or upright? Any rust problems? Is it in a covered spot? (Not a garage)

Thanks in advance.

I used to keep an upright freezer in an old unattached garage in Memphis. The garage was just a collection of half rotten boards with no insulation and an open window, so it didn't provide a lot in the way of weather protection. Very damp and muggy, the spiders loved it.
You shouldn't have to worry about your food not staying frozen, and I never had rust problems from the freezer. The bigger issue is that it will probably cost you more to run it in the outside location. Get the best energy rating you can.

Here is something for you to read, OP:

They aren't cheap, though:

Best models probably those built-in to protect from temperature extremes.

Thanks you two. I'm still cogitating.

I became familiar with compact appliance years ago....no way I'll ever buy from them. Prior to recent events, 3-5 cubic ft freezers (at least chest ones) were selling for under $300 (some more, of course, although I found some for half that). But I think at that time I was thinking of squeezing it into the carport.

I'm waffling.

Good article...just muddied the waters though...lol. Sometimes more information makes things worse.

Outdoor freezer as in: no overhang, exposed to the weather, etc.? I can't imagine.

Yeah, I think it'll have to go in the carport.

I think the cheapo ones I was looking at weren't built for outside. But I guess if it's going in the carport, a cheapo one will work. I hope.

Shaded and covered area is a must - otherwise, it won't survive a season, or two.
What about humidity? (Think rust)

What about one of the plastic garden lockers? As light as they are you could probably assemble it around the freezer. That would keep it out of the weather. Don't know how much they cost but I wouldn't think a freezer out in the open wouldn't be happy for very long.

amil...I think I just have to buck up and put it in the carport.

elnina: crud...it's sold out and they won't ship to me. And it doesn't have a lock. This is what I'm running into: sub $300s are all out of stock. Everyone beat me to it. But I'm going to call BB and see why they won't ship to me. Odd. All their chest freezers say sold out; actually, they show up as "add to cart" until the page moves, then they're all sold out. Weird.
