I don't think you need to worry. Detergent gets out some stains better than bleach does, so you may have been drying yourself with towels that had a little dirt on them, but it was sanitized dirt. After washing and rinsing, the bleach will be so dilute as not to pose a threat.

How much bleach did you put into the washer, OP? Per laundry load?

Elnina, I put 6 white bath towels in the load so I filled the bleach to the max level. I only used my bath towels once before tossing them in the hamper. I have other colored bath towels that I used as well at times and I used regular detergent for that. Also, once a week I did a tub cleaning for the machine where I used bleach at the max level.

Thinking back, when I finished washing/drying my white towels I noticed a heavy bleach smell on the towels.

I think you took your doctor’s suggestion too literally. When he said to use bleach, he meant to add bleach like one normally would doing laundry, not use only bleach exclusively.

Just a bit of bleach is enough to kill any virus or bacteria. Using too much will make the fabric start to deteriorate.

When you add so much that there is a strong bleach smell that means there is bleach leftover on your towels and when you wipe yourself with those towels the bleach will get on you, which will irritate your skin.

Could be the reason for my eczema flare up around my eyes. I have dark circles around my eyes because I've been itching/rubbing them.

Well at least now I know.

And you can expect reduced life out of those towels; chlorine is a strong oxidizer and has undoubtedly degraded the fibers somewhat. Whether that means they're all going to develop holes in the next six months, or six years, or sixteen years, only time will tell.

Since you have eczema, you may want to use the tide free and clear if you don't already so that's less of other chemicals touching your skin.

Oh, please do! Tide is a harsh/strong cleanser --- hopefully, the free & clear will be

Also, you will want to wash those towels without any bleach at all a couple times, to get out the residual excess bleach. Otherwise if you wash them with colored things those will be damaged by residual bleach. (Known from personal experience.)

Honestly, I think people are overeacting...ive done all of the above and more and no one died, have excema, no excessive wear nor residual bleach.

Chlorine bleach and detergents can actually cancel each other out.
