I bought a Frigidaire 7 cu ft freezer chest only 1 year and 3 months ago and ordered it online at homedepot.ca. I use it on average once every 2 or 3 months and turn it on when my fridge's freezer compartment is full or when certain foods will not fit, or when I buy groceries in bulk.

My Frigidaire freezer was on the past 2 weeks with no problem and when it became empty of food again I turned off the power. Then the next day I turned it on again because I bought a frozen turkey but that is when for the first time I heard the metallic clanking sound coming from the motor compartment with that vent over it and then the freezer stopped. I waited an hour and turned on the power again and it worked perfect with no clanking sound at all. This morning I tested it again and the same problem occurred with the clanking sound and then it turned off. Although as of now I turned it back on and its working normal again with no clanking sound.

Anyone have an idea as to why my freezer sometimes makes a clanking sound then turns off but then other times it works perfect with no clanking sound? When the clanking sound occurs, it only occurs after I turn on the freezer but I never hear it when the freezer is running everyday.

It seems this rattling metallic sound only occurs if I turn on my freezer while freezer is defrosting and frost is melting. I did some google search and while a freezer is defrosting if its turned on a rattling sound may occur in the compressor due to water indicating something is wrong with the compressor or other parts. I've been testing this unit a few days now after it defrosted while its completely dry and no rattling sound is occurring after I turn it on and I tried it now 6 times. I'll make sure never to turn on this freezer while its still defrosting and frost is still melting.

If it has only a one year warranty and you bought it with a credit card you might have an extra year on the credit card's extended warranty. Check it and get it fixed now that you can reproduce the problem. Otherwise it is likely to get worse. Rattling noises are bad news no matter what the reason.
