I went to Grand Union with my mom as a kid. That article is a bit misleading in regards to the dates of when Grand Union was bought by Tops, though. It wasn't in 2001, but in 2013. A few stores survived the bankruptcy and lasted until then.

Alpha Beta is the only one on that list that I ever heard of, and I definitely wouldn't call it beloved. I remember when I was a kid in San Bruno, CA going with my parents to Purity, and QFI. Later after we moved, there was Lynch's in Walnut Creek. All of those are gone.
I also remember only Alpha Beta, from my childhood, and Fresh & Easy--that one was just a few years ago.
Any other Californians recall Market Basket and Hughes? My mom also got a lot of produce at a small supermarket called McCoy's, but that may have been a local one-off.
Oh, and Fazio's! There was a Fazio's in La Habra on Whittier Blvd. near Beach Blvd.
I'd heard of Grand Union, but only after its demise.
About fifteen years ago I took a job for a supermarket chain expanding into my hometown. At the grand opening, several of their corporate people (along with the founder's son) attended. Everyone seemed nice except for this one corporate guy who walked around with a sour expression on his face the whole time and was openly rude to the employees. When he "left to pursue other interests" (translation: got fired) a few years later someone made the off-hand remark that "he'd almost single-handedly ran Grand Union into the ground" and that they had gotten rid of him before he could do similar damage to their chain. So my only exposure to GU is having met one of the reasons they no longer exist.
