I can honestly say, I never get food from the discount section. I just want to buy the freshest foods that have the longer expirations dates, etc., so I don't have to shop again too often.
I've gotten some amazing deals on my HEB clearance rack. We check it at every trip. A lot of items either have slightly damaged packaging or they are items that are being discontinued. I bought several packages of pasta for 50 cents each recently - it looked like they were discontinuing that brand. We buy discounted meats at Randalls - I won't touch old chicken though. Beef is almost always OK and the pork is usually good.
Food can't "look stale" any more than food can "taste fresh." Some palates are just too refined for old food!
If the bread rolls are crumbling in their package, that looks stale to me. Cucumbers that are wrinkly and soft look stale to me.
My palate is not terribly refined. I just prefer to eat stuff that’s fresh.

That's so ridiculous! Why not sell it for half-price (or less) in the last few hours of the day and advertise it?
Oh, yeah; because everyone would wait till THEN to buy it...
I'm sure it's perfectly fine (if kept refrigerated) the next day, though, and many fewer would want it then...
Sinfully wasteful!
I should say at the end of the day if they are not sold, they would have to destroy it.
Some said this is illegal to sell after expiration date.
Those supermarkets which have sushi chef making sushi, they work for a different company, they would destroy them or may be the workers take them home, avocado will turn dark and would look awful.
I remember in the 80s when I lived in Forest Hills,NYC ,there is a seafood shop, they have fresh fish every day and at the end of the day they dispose them if not sold, where did it go,as it is still good?
Well,a restaurant popped up in the neighborhood selling fresh fish dinner with salad and baked potato for low price, guess where they get the fish?
they destroy the deli items and sushi and fresh meat/seafood which expire that day.
I have bought meat where the date ends the same day I bought it. They put a yellow tag on it that says "Manager's Special". As long as you use it that day or freeze it, and it still looks ok, it should be fine.
