Slow death? Its sales dropped by 1/3 in the last quarter. That’s a quick death. Really too bad. But I’d guess Macy’s and Target are rejoicing.

I just went to my local BB&B (the one I mentioned above) and wow, the inventory is low. Yet one of the workers was loading stuff onto the shelves, so they must still be getting deliveries.

In all of their stores that I have visited over the past few months, there is a LOT of empty floor space near the entrance, where there used to be product displays. A few days ago, in one of their largest stores, I observed a lot of totally bare shelves in the health & beauty section. Yes, they are still getting deliveries, but it is clear to me that they are not receiving as much merchandise as they used to.

Heh, if it's anyone who is rejoicing, it's Amazon.

I feel bad for people that actually want or need to work retail

It used to be a great store. Shopping was once fun with all the choices and decent products on the shelves. I really miss just being able to go to any store in the area and getting what I needed off the shelf, shopping at the mall with friends, and getting lunch. And dragging the boyfriend or husband around to the home stores. lol.
My husband actually used to like Kitchen Etc., going through all those gadgets. I could spend plenty of time at BB&B, but it was really weird and disappointing when I went there once this past year.

Retail is tough, I've worked hours like 1 to 10pm or 11am to 8pm. No life shifts, weekends are a must.

Only saving grace is from some of the jobs I got paid to stay in shape and lose weight. Like when I worked at Home Depot in the Lumber Dept.

YES! The front section in my store used to be packed with seasonal merchandise, now it's empty. Many other sections are the same way.

We spent far too much time and money at BB etc. But it wasn't long before a notable drop in quality made it unpleasant to shop there: really difficult returns, filthy rest rooms, no sales people knowing where anything was, resulting in wild goose chases. Prices weren't great to begin with.

Haven't shopped there in a very long time.

My local BBB had a corporate-induced identity crisis several years ago, and the store has never really recovered. They used to have the "rooms" structure of merchandising different categories, with storage in the center and back areas. in a remodeling effort they stripped the storage area and the 'rooms' out of the center area, making it a wide-open space with the basics in rooms along the walls. The center was given over to merchandise from other chains that BBB owned or merged with--stuff like seasonal stuff from Christmas Tree Shops, and small furniture, food, and makeup from World Market (I think). They apparently thought better of this, because these items seemed to slowly disappear....but the space is not being adequately re-filled with other merchandise options, and the open space in the center makes the place feel desolate. It feels as if this location could easily move into a space half this size...and if would be a better look, since the space would have a better in-stock condition.

Pre-remodel, they hung merchandise all the way up the walls to give it a fuller look. Now they just have blue shades pulled down over those areas to hide blank walls. The shift to private-label items also turned me off since I had no brand loyalty to these made-up names. Their "Beyond Store" option was a great concept twenty years ago but they did not allow it to grow as every other retailer went to e-commerce.
