My cousin and her husband always shopped at a particular pawn shop that has a great reputation for jewelry. They bought their wedding rings and many other pieces from them. Their jewelry always appraised for more than what they paid.
Then my other cousin went too and bought her wedding rings from them.
So, when my husband and I got engaged we went there too for our wedding rings.
And sure enough my engagement ring appraised for double the amount we paid!!!
Not all pawn shops are overpriced, but I do think they are few and far between to find a good one.

Most pawn shops work very closely with the local law and do not want to sell anything that has been stolen. Identification is required to pawn an item. The items that are for sale are items that people did not come to pick up after having pawned them. Thus the term "dead pawn" or "old pawn". All pawn shops vary greatly....some pass their pawn on at relatively good prices while others tend to put a large mark up on the pawn items. Pick and choose carefully, but have fun cruising all the different items.

I went browsing in one back in the 1990's and while I was there, the guys working in the store all pulled pistols out of their holsters and went running out the door after someone. I had no idea what was going on and I didn't stick around to find out. To this day, I still shy away from these stores becuase they feel "shady" to me.

I go to pawn shops, but not as much as I used to. I usually go to look for used CDs and DVDs. I've also looked for used electronics ... I have bought TVs, CD players and cassette decks from pawn shops before.
