My condo board has decided to change our weathered grey wooden fences to ugly glaring white poly vinyl chloride ones.

A very few of us are very distraught because we know just how toxic this stuff is. It has even been banned in some countries. Do you all have any ideas of how we can change the minds of these people who don't believe in these health claims . Has anyone had any experience with this product?

What makes you think they are toxic? A Google search doesn't support that.

well, actually we googled poly vinyl choloride and several articles said that it was one of the most carcinogenic substances known to man. It has been banned throughout Europe , San Francisco (yes, sorry...) and now New York City.

Not when used as a fence. As with many chemical products it's the people who make them who are in danger not those that use them.

If you went to work in a chemical plant or refinery no doubt you'd be surprised at the dangers.

Well, the article said that PVC fences and sideboards would "off gases long after they were installed."

Being outside the gases (of VERY small amounts anyway) will disperse, no danger, you're exposed to more chemicals while fueling your car. Or while painting a wood fence.

Banning PVC is more about making a statement than being practical.

You are worrying about the wrong thing, the only thing that fence may do is leach dioxin into the ground but that has not been a proven fact as of now.

Vinyl chloride is the nasty stuff that will mess you up but the consumer doesn’t come into contact with it, there were childrens toys made from pvc, medical IV bags and tubes are pvc, look around inside your house your going to find tons of pvc, might be a good idea to just let the fence issue die.

Well I dont know about toxens but I do know that they break easy in the cold like most plastic. After awhile look ugly. A few people around town put them up now wish they hadnt. Looks good at first but not worth the expence.
