I just got back from the large regional shopping mall near my home. I just wanted to walk around and people watch. I could not believe how crowded it was and how many people were carrying bags full of goods.
I also noticed something at many of the stores, Christmas (the Holiday Season) is here! Yes, it is not even October yet and Christmas displays are already up and the stores are promoting the annual Holiday Shopping Season.
I am working currently but who knows about next week. Next week could be the start of the next great economic depression. Wouldn't be logical to basically defer all spending on things we do not need until things improve.
I say, that most people should defer spending money on Christmas gifts and instead they should add to their rainy day emergency fund. Agree?
If that is the strategy that will make you most comfortable, yes, I agree that you should follow it.

The annual feeding frenzy is obnoxious regardless of economic circumstances, in my biased opinion.
Then again, I don't observe "the holidays" in any way except to work, get time-and-a-half, allow someone to be home if they want to be, and get martyr points at work. Plus, there's often food.
Actually, spending helps boost the economy and most retailers depend on the christmas season to pull them from red to black. If people cut spending for christmas, it could actually make things worse.

I, myself, enjoy Christmas and I love giving presents no matter how old the person is...
That being said, I have never ever gone into debt. I shop all year long...if something catches my eye that I think someone will like I get it then.
With the exception of my immediate family, I average $20.00 per person.
Husband and I are limiting our gifts to each other this year to passports and stocking stuffers (we'll break this rule but oh well)
Probably $200.00 total for son, dil and Kali.
Or maybe it just means that most people aren't doing as bad as the liberal media would want you to believe. I know in my household, I'm not doing any worse than I was 1, 2 even 3 years ago.

Christmas will be slim at our house this year. I had to forgo taking my son to see my mom who lives onthe other side of the country becasue what used to be a $500 ticket a year ago, is now over $1000. My son is over 2 so he's not free. To see my family this holiday it will cost me $3000!!!
I will purchase some gifts for my son. Nothing extravegant...and my husband and I will not purchase for each other...
