Today I went to W-Mart for groceries. I have noticed price increases on almost everything in the past month but today I was shocked. I buy a maple syrup that I was paying $4.78 up to two weeks ago. Today the same product, same size was $7.59. I have no idea how W-mart can justify this and when I asked it was like talking to a brick wall. Did all the maple trees in American burn down?

Another potential situation here ... Perhaps you speak English and the person or persons you were trying to talk to didn't understand the language??? Did you ever hear the phrase "me speaka no engie" during your conversation with them?

Bravo!!!! I'll bet you are right.
And to the previous poster....YES,WAL-MART HAS A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON PRICES OF CONSUMER GOODS.And trust me,you'll be the loser before they are in any price increase.

It's not just Walmart. I paid $8 for a small bottle recently at the local grocery store. Weather conditions made for an awful maple harvest this year, so demand is far outpacing supply.
From these posts I can see that Reputation rating is highly misleading.
Twinkle Toes,
You really need to research maple syrup before you post. Your post looks like something Sarah Palin would write. BTW, the person I talked to at W-mart spoke very good English.
Sixty Minutes did a thing about Wal-Mart and it is fact that W-mart dictates what prices it will pay and therefore controls the final retail price. This particular item is a "natural organic" product and I assume that W-mart decided it could charge more and so they did.

VERY TRUE....My wife and I own a grocery store/diner and we have to give WAY more wholesale for our products than Wal-mart sells retail for.It is impossible to compete with them and the playing field is nowhere near level. They buy in STAGGERING bulk and companies bow to them because they are a make you or break you type outfit. They sell 100 million cases of Coke per week,I sell 20 so who's going to get the crappy end of the stick on pricing,me or wally world? My wholesale on a case is in the $4 range and they can retail at that price and make a fortune. They have put mom and pop shops completely out of business.I do agree that it has helped the consumer, but it is a self serving help...When they run the competition out of an area, they jack their prices up sky high again and reduce their stock. The American way tho'...I guess.
I try not to shop in W-mart... But, some household items like laundry soap are cheaper. Food items, however, are not always better priced than the local groceries or the local farmers market (where the fruit/veggies actually taste good). I also am disappointed with the variety of items like a previous poster mentioned. For example, bbq sauce - maybe 5 varieties of a particular brand at W-mart, and 10+ varieties of the same brand at another local grocery - for the same price or better ---- and less crowds!
