The smell (newness scent) did go away the next day for me. I left the windows open and really by the evening it was gone (and it wasn't that bad to begin with).
Your are right, the smell in my memory foam topper also went a way after about 3 days.

Ah, we had one on our bed...and somehow it got a stain along the side and I got the bright idea of washing it out in the bathtub. Don't. EVER. Try. That. It soaked up an ocean's amount of water and I could not get the water out! I dragged it outside, leaving a wet mess behind me all through the house and slung it across a couple chairs. It NEVER dried out. It was too big to put in the garbage can and much too heavy...so I cut it all in big squares and threw it out over a few weeks! Right now I am chuckling at my own stupidity!
