I purchased a 4" memory-foam mattress topper which came with a card saying:

"Thank you for purchasing this product. We know that it will provide you years of comfort. Upon removing it from the packaging you may notice a newness scent. In order to maximize your enjoyment of this product, it is recommended that you air it out for 8 or more hours in a well ventilated space before using, to allow the newness scent to completely dissipate."

Most (not all) of the odor did dissipate, but I'm wondering if it's toxic in nature? Does anyone else have any experience with this product

It IS comfortable to sleep on, so far (only used it 2 nights).

Comments would be appreciated

Yeah... Nancy.... WE had a laugh when I read that to my friend - it smelled really BAD, from being encased in saran-wrapping. Most of the bad smell has dissipated, but not all.

Now, however -- the additional 4" of height to my already tall q/size mattress has made it a challenge for my old body to get on and off the bed without twisting so now I have a slight side-ache from getting off the high bed, this morning.

Still......... it IS VERY COMFORTABLE to sleep on..... so I'll give it one more night to see if I can learn how to get on & off without breaking my back

Do you find the memory foam retains body heat? I am so worried about that - I sleep hot and HATE the bed to be hot.

On another note, I once bought a feather bed topper - after purchasing I read review that some said it smelled horrible, others didn't notice an odor. We aired it out for days - it STUNK. I gave it to my cousin to make a dog bed out of and his dog ripped it up. I think they used roadkill for it.

My 2nd floor bedroom is as cold as a meat locker so I use an electric mattress pad, which I sleep on --- and an electric blanket on top!! If the memory foam retains heat, all the better

Regarding your feather bed..... perhaps it was something OTHER THAN white goose-down, therefore the odor I've used white goose-down comforters for many years, and never experienced any odor.

My new urethane memory topper came with that card..... which also said:

Although unlikely, some people may find themselves hyper-sensitive to the newness scent, in which case you may wish to discontinue use and return the product to your retailer."

Since I purchased it at Walmart for $131, I'm confident they will take it back, if I give up. I'm still testing it Like I said..... it IS very comfortable.

I can sleep on them because I find them hot.

I started out with the foam topper and loved it so much that I bought the foam mattress (Costco). I am at the "age" of sweats and I find no difference whether I sleep on a regular mattress or my foam
The smell (newness scent) did go away the next day for me. I left the windows open and really by the evening it was gone (and it wasn't that bad to begin with).

I have a couple of memory foam pillows I got as a gift. I love their shape and how they bounce back...but they certainly DO retain heat. At first I just thought my hot flashes were getting out of hand...................... until I spoke to another friend who also had them.

Still worth it....I love those things.

Here's a link if someone wants to read up on the product. If you scroll down they cover the "smell":
