Is there anything that you can buy with a single coin? Considering that the quarter is the largest coin in most cash registers, and not counting small quantities of produce sold by the pound (like one grape), what can you buy with a single coin in the United States?

Some chain pharmacies sell hypodermic needles for about 18 cents, and they even have moving parts. Garden supply stores sell little paper-mache starter boxes for plant settings for less than a quarter apiece. Is there anything else you can think of?

I used one coin to pay for crossing Victoria Harbour from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island.

It is the best value in the entire world.

A few cents gives you the most incredible views on a really atmospheric ferry full of the life and vibrancy of Hong Kong.

Every time I leave my local Harris Teeter I stop by the candy machines and buy myself a handful of Skittles. For a quarter.

With the Dollar Coin, a soda. With a Quarter, a gumball or a handful of chicklet-like gum.

For a quarter here you get:

12-15 minutes on a parking meter downtown

5-7 minutes to dry your clothes at the laundromat

2-3 packs of Ramen noodles

a 1 ounce bag of Doritos at the grocery store

a cigarette from the dude waiting at the bus stop next to you

air for your tires at the gas station
