Long before banks started locating branches inside supermarkets, grocery stores acted as informal financial establishments, cashing payroll checks and personal checks to provide ready cash for their customers. That's starting to change.

I'm a Debit Card user, so I have no idea why people still want to goof around with writing checks at the check out counter anyway. But, I do think it is a bad move since many people are really more comfortable writing checks....especially older people. They just have more confidence in a paper trail.

There was a locally owned sporting goods store here that I patronized for several years for the various things one needs for waterfowl hunting, always paid by check. Went in to get my hunting license a few years ago along with some paintball stuff for my son, and the clerk tells me that they no longer take checks (this was at checkout after the requisite paperwork had been done). They also didn't take credit cards. Never went back. Apparently they rescinded the policy shortly after my experience.

You guys using charge cards need to have enough money in your account to pay for what you buy and then stop using five declined credit cards and stop holding up the damn line.

Who cares? Bring cash or a card next time. You're not the only person on this planet.
