Went to Target. Everything 80% cotton. -% nylon, -% acrylic, -% polyester, -% something I'd never heard of before. Went to Penny's. Same thing. Sales person told me no one carries 100% cotton athletic socks anymore. Wha Hoppon? Cheaper to manufacture, I'm sure, but the demand is out there. Doesn't any big retailer carry them?
There are lots of places to shop beyond the big box stores. They cater to the lowest common denominator who only seems to care about price. You never get quality with the lowest price.
I have purchased all cotton items online, from sites like eBay and Amazon, plus many lesser known specialty sites.
Those of us stuck in small towns depend on the internet merchants to keep us supplied with a bigger assortment of products than any Target or WalMart would ever carry. And with their lower overhead, I usually can find cheaper prices on line than at these monolithic stores.
I do watch for free shipping and deals on line, so the costs are comparable and I save gas and time.
Wigwam has very good tube socks. I'm not sure if they're 100 % cotton, but the quality is very good. Local merchants (sporting goods stores esp.) usually sell them. You could also go to their website.
Sometimes if you can't find it anywhere else, check out Vermont Country Store or Vermont Country Catalogue, (I can't remember what they are called.....I used to get their little catalogue....it is kinda made out of newsprint, not slick pics).... They sometimes have stuff that 'your mom used to buy when you were a kid', (but now you can't find it anywhere else and you wonder if it is even made anymore).
I buy my 100% cotton, Champion socks at Big Lots. Yes Big Lots. A pack of 10 for 8$
Even Big Lots doesn't carry them anymore!!!! Heeeelllllp!
Some selection online but they don't look like the nice heavy terry cloth smooth-outside, rough-inside ones I used to be able to pick up in any dept. store about 5-10 years ago.
I've got just 6 thread-bare pair left from about 5 years ago. They've lasted that long. They're probably relics headed for the Smithsonian.
I just got off the phone with Sam's Club in El Monte, Ca. Nothing there either. This is maddening. How could a product that was as common as dirt a few years ago go completely extinct in such a short time and WHY????? I've tried virtually ever major retailer there is. I even walked down a clothing outlet mall once---store by store---roughly 20 stores---and nobody had 100% cotton socks. This baffles me. Is it the prohibitive cost of cotton, or is it that demand just nosedived to 0??
It's the fact that the products no longer are made in the US, but rather other countries who use less expensive product.
