I dont remember ever going shopping on New Years Day.

Depends on the store... some around here are open, but most are not.

This is a tourist based town during a very busy season. Everything HERE is open....but that may not be true for lots of other towns.

Target and grocery stores should be open. Not sure about the smaller ones (like Panera).

Our mall in Capitola (California) was open. I was a little surprised about that.
