How often do you buy new dishes or flatware? (sets, stores, coffee)

How often do you buy new dishes or flatware? Do you usually buy your own sets or do people ever buy you sets as gifts?...My son just bought us a beautiful set of flatware for our anniversay....Our existing set is from the early 80's....I love to look at new styles of dishes in stores once in awhile but I don't buy new sets very often. How about you?
I've had my flatware & everyday dishes for over 20 yrs. now; they were my 1st set. Seems wasteful to replace them when they are not broken. My fine china/fine silver has been passed along in my family for over 100 yrs. I would never replace it (buy new) and hopefully those who will inherit it will feel likewise.
I just in the past year or two replaced the everyday dishes and flatware we had received as wedding gifts. Some of the flatware was missing (no doubt accidentally left at potlucks or tossed out) and some of the dishes had chipped or had been broken over the years. We've been married 22 years so yep....around 20 years for us too.
I wonder if some people buy dishes every few years to "be in style." The styles seem to change on a regular basis....Guess "square plates" are "in" right now...What special features do you look for when you do buy dishes? I like to have two sizes of bowls...big and small...and "mug-like" coffee cups. How about you? Thanks for your posts.
I buy new dishes and flatware when mine start to disappear or break.. I am down to like 9 forks and 4 spoons... I think my son (6 y/o) throws them out when done eating. My husband has broken a few plates & bowls. So now its time for new...
I see no need to buy new stuff if my older stuff is still in good condition. I love solid white dishes. They stand the test of time and colorful napkins/decor items is what I use for various holidays or if I change the color of the dining room. I only buy flatware and new glasses when I need to....and I get rid of the older odd numbered ones.
How do you feel about the new "square" plates? Do you think they will be around for long time? I try to avoid buying dishes that seem too "trendy." They might go out of style fast.

You're smart....Thanks for posting. I never thought about how versatlile white dishes could be when they are "dressed up" with different decor and colored accessories. Thanks for sharing.
My dishes have been with me since the early 90's and are still doing VERY well. The flatware on the other hand ... Don't know about you folks, but my flatware was holding up well from the late 90's till I had to replace my dishwasher. Now, if put into the dishwasher as part of the normal cycle, they come out with rust on them! I scored a new set of flatware at Penney's in their after Christmas sale (80% off!), but I am loathe to use them since I love the handles on my "old" set. Ah, the dilemnas!
