To make a long story short - we came on vacation from SW FL to SW OK. On our way home we were going to stop in NOLA for a few days but on the way here had a really tough time getting a hotel in Mobile. We were told it was because of the government officials staying in the hotels in the area so we're assuming that NOLA will be much of the same.

I would just visit NOLA and find a place to stay there, just b\c you had a hard time getting a hotel in Mobile doesn't mean you won't be able to get one in New Orleans. There's tons more to see and do there -- French Quarter, Oak Alley Plantation, great Cajun food, etc, etc. Shreveport and Vicksburg aren't exactly vacation destinations. Both have casinos though, if that's your thing (but so does New Orleans...)
