Saw a story on msn.com provided by Bankrate, a national news aggregator of all things financial, etc. They do statistical research on things like places-rated, crime indices, cost-of-living, quality-of-life, etc.

Looks like Louisiana made the top 10 list as one of the worst states to retire in.
Crime rate, poverty rate among retirees, life expectancy were major factors.
With all the budget cuts happening in education, healthcare, etc.; makes you wonder
what impact that will have on a future ranking.

Here's a link if you're interested: 10 worst states to retire in- MSN Money

By now, I'm immune to these types of rankings for Louisiana. I pretty much expect them, and when the opposite happens I wonder who paid them off.

This is reversed of what I read from Forbes or Money mag awhile back. It had Louisiana and most of the other states on the worst list as the best retirement states and what was best on this "latest" list was the worst. You can't win. Somebody is going to like or hate something about everywhere. Personally, Louisiana is not as bad as many make it out to be for retirement. The states listed as worst (La included) on the bankrate list are much cheaper to live in with lower tax rates. I will need that in short order as I am approaching retirement age. Bankrate's best states are too expensive for me (just look at the price of real estate in those places). I don't have that kind of money. Crime and medical care do enter the equation, but BC is not so bad and we do have pretty good medical care.

The deep south is always under attack and will be the whipping boy forever. I don't care. It is what it is and unless the people really want change it won't happen.

This article is specifically shaped to drive those interested in Personal Finance. I love LA, but I won't live there due to the summer heat. I also would not be likely to live in the other 10 for the same reason. I do think some of the stats used are are over-rated and shaded.
