Just a note in case anyone isn't aware, this weekend the LOUISIANA FILM PRIZE FILM FESTIVAL is underway in downtown Shreveport. This is turning out to be a really cool event as filmmakers from Louisiana and all over the country have entered the festival in hopes of winning a $50K prize. The requirements were submitted films needed to be made in Shreveport, LA and be of a dramatic nature in short format. There are 20 finalists and the films are being screened at 3 different locations downtown over the weekend. This festival was designed to promote Shreveport as a place for indy filmmakers to come and make their projects. Apparently the effort has paid off as it's been estimated that the filmmakers have brought in anywhere from $500K to over a million dollars in generated revenue for the area, including hiring local crews, services, hotel & restaurant bills, taxes, etc.

Hope this gives the indy film biz a shot in the arm and generates spin offs as far as local film industry is concerned. To read more, click the newslink below:

I think this festival is awesome and a nice addition to the other two film festivals we have in this other, including the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, which really displays Shreveport as a more open-minded area than most cities of its size, especially southern cities of its size.

Just don't count on City Councilman Ron Webb (nor most in his district) for support , he went on record to try to get the city council not to support a grant for the Robinson Film Center because it hosts a the Gay & Lesbian film festival because he doesn't support anything to do with Gay rights. While Shreveport has become (more or less) open-minded about alternative lifestyles, there's still a loooong way to go towards tolerance. The G&L Festival committee "rented the space" and some would like to withdraw city funding from the RFC because they don't discriminate.

For more info: here's a link to City Council Meeting Minutes / a rebuttal to his statements:

How sad in 2012. Some things will never change in Shreveport, I suppose.

So it would seem. This is a classic case of an elected official opening his mouth before carefully considering the weight of his words. He might as well have said he was also against any city funding for community arts organizations, public performance theaters & venues, Shreveport Arts Council and any and all funding grants against arts education programs because they have something to do with Gay & Lesbian rights. In a time when our city is trying to attract a permanent "creative class", you'd think the politicians with this bent would be more aware of what impact their comments can make.

Sadder still is that probably a majority of the constituents in his district may share his point-of-view.
