Our son who is in his mid 20s has accepted a job in Waskom TX. He is trying to decide what area to live in.... Waskom, Shreveport/Bossier, or Marshall. He doesn't need a large apartment, just something in a safe area and $600 or less a month. Should he stay in TX because there is no state tax or is the Shreveport area better because of college and things to do? Thanks for the advice

This one should be unanimous. Stay in Texas b/c of the lack of income tax. Check out Marshall and Longview if nothing is available in Waskom (I'm betting there is). Shreveport is close enough to drive to often for just about anything. Good choices there would be Bossier City and southeast Shreveport. But I would explore Marshall and Longview both before considering Shreveport/Bossier. BTW I am a resident of the "SBC" and think he would like Texas better. I would but I'm kind of stuck here.

Thanks for the advice. We were kind of leaning towards staying on the TX side of things just because of the income tax in LA. He checked with an apartment complex in Waskom but they don't have anything until Dec. He has a couple of them in Marshall with openings.

Marshall, TX is a lot closer to Waskom than Longview. While Longview is a larger area, I'd definitely recommend Marshall because it has its own charm. The downtown square has a budding nightlife / music scene. There's apartments and he may even find a small house to rent at his budget.
